Moises
Moises was 15 years old when he first entered foster care in South Los Angeles. At his age, he was treated like an adult and he felt the heartbreaking reality of his fractured family. He felt alone and disconnected. As he navigated two more foster homes, he was able to relate to another foster boy who was his age, but he missed his family. When he was reunited with some of his siblings in the third home, he had the caring guidance of his sister who is five years older. It was a tough transition for him, but he was elated to be reunited with some of his family! His sister fought to keep them together as she selflessly put her goals on hold as a for her medical education. She is Moises’ biggest inspiration today!
Moises is now a Senior at UC Davis pursuing his dreams in the tech world and wants to be a front-end engineer or web developer. He strives for success and wants to make enough money to invest so that he can help his family buy a new home and they can all be together again! Moises has a heart of gold…he wants to thrive in his job, but he wants to be there for his family too!
Fostering Success has been valuable to Moises. Students are required to read useful books that help them on their journey to becoming successful. His favorite book thus far is “How To Win Friends and Influence People,” by Dale Carnegie. He says his biggest take away was learning how to listen to others. And not just what people say, but how they say it. He has recommended this book to all his family members!
Moises has flourished with his advocate, Doug Barnett, who has given him a wealth of information, from business advice to his personal life. Moises says, “Doug is easy to connect with and he is someone to look up to as a role model.”
Moises is one of the beneficiaries of the Fostering Success and Significance program. We could not be more proud of all that he has accomplished and we are so thankful that he shared his story with us. For more information on how to get involved, please visit our join us page.
